Prof. Artem Oganov Visited ISSP

Dr. Artem Oganov, professor of Stony Brook University, attended the 2014 International Symposium on Multi-scale Modeling and Simulation of Materials in ISSP on July 8th. He was warmly welcomed by ISSP co-director Prof. Zhi Zeng and director of CEMEE Dr. Xiaojia Chen. In the evening of 8th, he gave a lecture on ˇ°Computational Materials Discoveryˇ±.

Dr. Oganov talked about the development of powerful structure prediction methods and codes, such as USPEX code enables prediction of materials with superior or unusual properties. He discussed several thrusts of his recent work and related fundamental questions, such as search for superhard and ultrahard materials, low-dimensional systems etc. He also introduced a new hydrogen hydrate H2O*2H2 (i.e. H6O) to be stable at pressures above 38 GPa. More intriguingly, he has discovered a class of ˇ°impossibleˇ± chemical compounds ¨C such as Na3Cl, Na2Cl, Na3Cl2, NaCl3, NaCl7 to become stable under pressure.

After the lecture, Prof. Zhi Zeng and Prof. Xiaojia Chen expressed their thanks to Dr. Oganov for his visit and hoped to cooperate with each other in the future.
